Catellani & Smith, established in 1989 on the initiative of Enzo Catellani,
is a company making many different types of lighting: table-top and standing lamps, wall and ceiling lights, as well as producing unique special pieces for installations in large internal and external spaces.
Its workshop is housed in an old restored mill in the province of Bergamo, providing an original environment in keeping with the philosophy of the company.
Catellani & Smith places itself outside the usual industrial mould and has chosen a path that takes us back to when products were crafted with the hands and the mind, aspiring to produce objects that revive the tradition of artisans, with all the meaning, magic and enthusiasm that manual work still today knows how to convey.
A design choice in which the product is not only an aesthetic, sometimes ironic expression, but also a quest for the perfect light.
Catellani & Smith manufactures using two tradenames that differentiate their production ranges:
The tradename Catellani & Smith groups together various lines and types of lamps:
Lamps with twisted plaits of transformable, flexible tubes that diffuse a soft yet intense glow;
Luce d’Oro (Golden Light), whose gilded surfaces reflect warm and sunny light;
Stchu-Moon, hand-crafted to produce an irregular surface, so that no two pieces are the same;
Out Collection, comprising the most imaginative and ironic objects designed by Enzo Catellani: precious handmade items produced in limited quantities.
All these objects are eye-catching, have no fear of the shade, but instead take full advantage of shape to create an interesting play of light, full of contrasts.
The new tradename “Lucenera” (Black Light) is a pure concept. A halogen lamp and a black, carbon-fibre tube make light the main focus, putting the lamp itself in the background. The beam and intensity of light can be adjusted with a simple hand movement, making Lucenera a tool with which anybody can use light as a design object in their own homes, offices, exhibitions etc.
In only a few years, by means of a simple but widespread organisation, Catellani & Smith’s image is now receiving exposure, through consolidated distribution channels, in many areas including:
Europe, U.S.A., South America, Israel, Thailand, Hong Kong.
Installations of particular interest can be found at the Mandarin Hotel in Hong Kong,the Palais Wilson in Geneva, headquarters of the United Nations (UN), the external areas in Rue des Chartreux in Brussels, Casa Batllo – Gaudì in Barcelona, and the State Cartography Museum/Trevi Fountain – Rome. Catellani & Smith’s lighting also featured in Claudio Baglioni’s “Tour Incanto” (Magic Tour) 2001 in all the major Italian Theatres.
