Bing Thom Architects is a highly acclaimed and innovative architectural firm in Canada. Founded in 1980 in Vancouver, British Columbia, the firm has executed a wide spectrum of design projects in North America and overseas, from single-family residences to the design of entire cities.
Led by principals, Bing Thom and LEED-certified Michael Heeney, the firm undertakes a selectively small number of projects in any given time, to ensure the maximum care and attention to detail at all stages of every project. Bing Thom Architects advocates a holistic approach that entails the principals’ involvement in all aspects of building, from urban planning to interiors to final construction, with a commitment to sustainability principles.
“Architecture is the art of making a meaningful whole out of many divergent parts. Each component must be thoughtfully considered, but a building shines when the parts become inseparable. For me, a building starts as an intimate response to the site, location and program. The concerns of place, time, materials, space, light and user needs all play a part, but it is the coherent resolution of these concerns, the exploration of the places in between, that creates the poetry and image of a great building.” – Bing Thom
Keystone projects around the world includes: the Canada Pavilion for Expo ‘92 in Seville, Spain; Central City, the new mixed-use campus for Simon Fraser University in Surrey, BC and winner of the 2004 MIPIM Special Jury Prize in Cannes France for world’s top development; the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts at the University of British Columbia; the Aberdeen Centre in Richmond, BC; the Pacific Canada Pavilion at the Vancouver Aquarium and Marine Science Centre; Master Plans for the Cities of Dalian and Yuxi in China and Fort Worth, Texas; and the recently completed Sunset Community Centre in a thriving multi-cultural neighbourhood in Vancouver, BC. The firm’s highly anticipated Arena Stage Theater complex is slated for completion in 2010 in Washington, DC.
